Spring tide days in the Côtes d'Armor

Côtes d'Armor

With a coefficient of 112 this month of October 2024, the spring tides offered us a beautiful spectacle both at low and at high tide with a rough sea in the Côtes d'Armor.

Day 1

My trip to the Côtes d'Armor begins with the superb bay of Morlaix with its string of islands: the Callot island, the Dames island, the Green island, the Black island, the White island, castle of the bull...

It is rather rare to see all these islands at such low tide thus revealing the immense oyster parks.

After a brief stop at the small boat cemetery of Plougasnou, I head off to discover the house of customs officers high perched on the point of Primel-Trégastel. Like the traditional guard corps, this one is well hidden away, sheltered by the rocks. The tip offers a superb view overlooking the cove of Diben on one side, and that of Primel on the other.

I go up further north on the pink granite coast at Saint Guirec to discover the oratory submerged at high tide and the castle of Costaérès on the island of the same name. The sun falls on the horizon and offers me beautiful golden and warm lights.

The oratory legend says that young unmarried girls, who wanted to get married, would prick pine needles on the saint's nose*. If the needle remained planted after the high tide, it meant that the wedding vow would be fulfilled before the end of the year.

* The statue of Saint Guirec was made of wood at the time.

Below, long exposures of the Castle of Costaérès, an imposing manor house in neo-medieval style, characteristic of the large holiday homes of the late 19th century...

…and without long exposures. In both cases the falling sun sublimates the castle and the island.

My day ends at blue hour and early night on the seafront of Perros-Guirec.

Day 2

Back on the seafront of Perros-Guirec, but this time at blue hour of the morning, by a misty and ghostly atmosphere. The spring tide is high, the clatter of the powerful waves that strike the dike mixes with the noise of the pebbles that roll under their assaults.

I follow the coast towards the West to reach the Bihit tip. The viewpoint dominates the bay of Trebeurden. A coastal path, with sometimes steep shortcuts, allows you to walk around the tip and this preserved nature.

Unfortunately the weather is getting cloudy and rain starts to appear early in the afternoon, ending this short stay in the Côtes d'Armor.
